THE LINE of BEST FIT began as a DIY project: a bunch of music nerds writing late at night, for free, because we cared. No plan, no money — just passion.

Somehow, you found us. And together, we built something rare: a real, independent platform for music writing, photography and video owned by the people who make it. No suits, no publishers, no sell outs. Just writers, photographers, and fans who still run this thing the way we always have — like a community, not a corporation.

What started as a music blog became a digital-first magazine - thelineofbestfit.com - and continues to thrive with the same ethos we had when we began, almost 20 years ago: a celebration of new music and a unique perspective on the artists who have shaped the cultural landscape. Along the way we launched a record label and a music festival too.

A million people each month read and watch what we make – and we love you for that. Here on Substack we’re returning to our roots and reconnecting with the same personal voices that created the site: our writers, friends and the artists we love, offering their own take on the music world, past and present.

But here’s the truth: we can’t keep giving everything away for free forever. Keeping the lights on and trying to find ways to do the kind of features we want to — it all adds up (and we really want to pay our writers too!)

We refuse to sell out or drown the site in ads so we’re here over on Substack asking for your help.

For £5 per month or £50 for a whole year, you’ll get:

  • Subscriber access to our entire Substack archive - which includes some real gems from the last 18 years of Best Fit

  • Early access to our main features such as Where Do I Begin, Desk Notes and more

  • Full access to our Talk the Line podcast archive and early access to new episodes

  • The joy of supporting music writing in all its forms.

Founding members also get a special package from the Best Fit shelves – a record selected by one of our editors along with a thank you note handwritten by us – along with our eternal gratitude – and a genuine open door to suggest what we should cover next.
